About Haringey
Haringey is a fantastic place to live and work – the world in one borough. A place brimming with creativity, personality, radicalism, and community. It is a place where we stand up for each other. A place that is proudly distinctive. We’ll be celebrating all this and more as the “rebel borough” when we are the 2027 London Borough of Culture.
Our history champions change-makers and everyday rebels; revelling in our differences, battling discrimination, championing equality, and doing things our own way. Haringey’s people are a huge asset, with knowledge, expertise, and passion. Our staff members embody our organisational values: Caring, Creative, Courageous, Collaborative and Community-focused. These values keep us looking forward, ambitious for the future, and continuously striving to do our very best for all our residents.
About the Role
As a Trading Standard Officer / Trading Standards Enforcement Officer, you will play a key role in protecting consumers, supporting businesses and ensuring a safe and fair-trading environment across Haringey. You will respond to service requests, carry out projects, investigate complaints and take proportionate enforcement action to address unsafe, illegal, or unfair trading practices.
You will use a mix of communication, persuasion, advice and statutory powers to achieve compliance, safeguard vulnerable residents and uphold legal standards. Your work will contribute directly to community wellbeing, placemaking, and the borough’s wider enforcement priorities.
About the Team
Our Trading Standards Team sits within Regulatory Services, part of the wider Environment and Resident Experience directorate. We are a proactive, community focused enforcement service working to protect residents and support a fair, thriving local economy.
The team delivers a broad and varied portfolio of work, including product safety, illicit goods, age restricted sales, intellectual property crime, scams, regional and local projects and Weights & Measures enforcement. We work closely with partners such as the Police, London Trading Standards, National Trading Standards, the HMRC, and other council services to deliver coordinated, intelligence led interventions.
About You
You are motivated by public protection, fairness, and high professional standards. You can communicate clearly, manage competing priorities, and work confidently with residents, businesses, and partner agencies. You are curious, analytical, and committed to developing your technical expertise in Trading Standards.
You will bring:
• A Level 6 Trading Standards Apprenticeship, Diploma in Trading Standards, Diploma in Consumer Affairs and Trading Standards, or equivalent DPCP/Board of Trade qualification.
• Detailed knowledge of Trading Standards legislation, including powers under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, The Digital Markets Competition and Consumers Act 2024, PACE, CPIA, and RIPA.
• Experience of handling enquiries, complaints, or regulatory issues in a customer focused environment.
• Strong IT skills, including the use of Microsoft Office and databases.
• Experience of working collaboratively with partners or contributing to cross cutting projects.
• Experience of conducting complex investigations, preparing prosecution files and giving evidence in court.
• Eligibility (or working towards) to be appointed as an Inspector of Weights and Measures under the Weights and Measures Act 1985.
